Website overhaul with monetizing features scales Powerball for the digital age and meets $12B revenue goal
Powerball was founded in 1992, and since then it has raised more than $29 billion for public services projects, nearly $1 billion for each year of existence. In 2022, on its 30th anniversary, Powerball set the record for the largest lottery prize ever awarded, when a Southern California man won more than $2 billion. The company is a vital source of fun and public funding for Americans. Some 12 million citizens buy tickets for each drawing, and the proceeds have enabled public education programs, infrastructure improvements and environmental preservation programs across the country. Powerball has ambitious goals, hoping to double its revenue over the next five years $12 billion per year — which is why Powerball partnered with Stellar to rebuild Powerball.com.

The Situation
As Powerball approached its 30th anniversary, it set its sights on the future: doubling their annual revenue to $12 billion.
As Powerball approached its 30th anniversary, it set its sights on the future: doubling their annual revenue to $12 billion. But to do that, they needed to connect with younger audiences and turn casual players into more frequent participants. The existing website didn’t reflect the energy, scale, or urgency of the Powerball experience, nor did it offer the kind of content or interaction that would engage Millennials and Gen X players—key targets in their growth strategy.

The Solution
Stellar reimagined Powerball.com as a dynamic destination built to engage, excite, and scale.
Stellar reimagined Powerball.com as a dynamic destination built to engage, excite, and scale. From a ticking countdown clock that adds urgency before each draw, to bold visuals and playful content that brought a $40 million jackpot to life (think: a stack of dollar bills as tall as the Eiffel Tower), the site now gives users real reasons to come back and play. We designed tailored messaging for different player types – from newcomers to loyal fans. We strengthened the backend to handle massive traffic spikes, 99.9% of the time. With deeper reporting, a clearer customer journey, and a fresh digital face, Powerball is now positioned to continue to grow both its player base and its impact.

The Impact
Powerball met its 5-year, $12 billion dollar/year revenue goal. And our upgraded server architecture continues to handle the intense 19,000+ spike in web traffic on draw days, with no downtime.
